The
Robert Trent Jones Signature Course at Palmetto Dunes
A classic layout by Robert Trent Jones, this island
gem was remodeled by Jones' protege, Roger Rulewich,
in 2002. After you play, you'll know what Jones had
in mind and what Rulewich kept alive - a great golf
course.
The journey begins on the 1st tee as you meander through
pine forest and a series of canals. By the time you
reach the 5th hole, the scent of salt starts to overpower
the smell of pine. The course opens up and several
lagoons come into play. As you tee up on the 9th hole,
the ocean beckons in the distance. Approaching the
10th green, your not sure whether to lay up with a
short iron or shoot a picture as shrimp boats, pelicans
and dolphins play in the surf behind the green. The
excitement continues once you reach the green. With
the ocean at your back, interconnected lagoons and
canals challenge every shot for the next five holes.
Salt and sea in the air tease you to go for it. As
the course winds down, the challenge remains. The
final stretch of holes play into another pine forest
with tightly guarded fairways and greens. Standing
on the 18th green, you look back remembering the pines,
canals, lagoons and beach.
Now you know why Golf Magazine made the Jones
Course the pick of the month in March 2003 and why
the South Carolina Golf Course Owners Association
made it the course of the year in 2003. And, you'll
know why you have to come back and play it again and
again!
